This tablet running Android 4.1 has a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, and 4GB of on-board storage, with support for a microSD card. There a 5-megapixel rear camera, and a VGA front facing camera.
Lenovo claims that the 3,500mAh battery will give you 8-hours of WiFi browsing, which sounds pretty good. There's no claiming this tablet can compete with high end offerings, but for basic use and Angry Birds, this should be just fine, and it's available at a very reasonable price.
2. Lava Ivory S (Rs. 8,499)
The Lava Ivory S is a fairly basic tablet, but it's low price makes it attractive. This dual-SIM tablet has a 7-inch display, which runs at a relatively low 1024x600 pixel resolution. Running on Android 4.2, this tablet is powered by a 1.3GHz dual-core CPU, and has 1GB of RAM, along with 4GB of internal storage and microSD card support.
The tablet, which has a relatively small 2,800mAh battery, is rated to deliver 8-hours of talk time.
3. iBall Slide 3G 7803Q-900 (Rs. 12,499)
The iBall Slide 3G 7803Q-900 tablet has a 7.85-inch display, at 1024x768 pixels, powered by a quad-core 1.3GHz processor alongside 1GB RAM and a 5-megapixel rear camera. Its 16GB of internal storage and microSD support are fairly standard in this price bracket as well, and it is running Android 4.2.
It also has a 4000mAh battery, and this dual-SIM tablet can support 3G SIM cards in both slots.
4. Asus Fonepad 7 Dual SIM (Rs. 12,999)
The Asus Fonepad 7 Dual SIM is, as the name promises, a 7-inch tablet with dual-SIM support, which delivers value for money, though it's certainly lagging in all other aspects.
Launched in April, this tablet runs at a resolution of 1280x800 pixels, and is powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of built in storage. This is an Intel powered tablet, and there is a 3,910mAh battery on this Android 4.3 tablet.
5. Xolo Tab (Rs. 13,499)
The Xolo Tab comes with an 8-inch IPS display with 1280x768 pixels resolution and boasts a pixel density of 160ppi. The tablet is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 8225Q processor along with 1GB of RAM and Adreno 203 GPU. The tablet comes with SIM support and voice-calling. The tablet includes 4GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card. It runs on Android 4.1.2.
There is a 4,000mAh battery, and Xolo claims it can be used for 4.9 hours of browsing on a Wi-Fi network. That's less than ideal if this is your primary device, and another caveat is that there is only a 2-megapixel rear camera on this tablet.
6. Micromax P650 Canvas Tab (Rs. 14,499)
Micromax has quickly grown to be one of the biggest brands in the Indian mobile market. The Canvas Tab is an attempt to build on this popularity, and this 8-inch tablet is pretty good.
It has an 8.00-inch 1024x768 pixel display powered by a quad-core 1.2GHz processor alongside 1GB RAM and a 5-megapixel rear camera, and it runs on Android 4.2. There is 16GB of storage and support for a memory card as well, and the 4800mAh battery gave us impressive backup.
In terms of performance and build quality, this is a good tablet, thought the weight and form factor are a little off putting.
7. Lenovo Tab A7-50 (Rs. 14,699)
The Lenovo Tab A7-50 tablet is a 7-inch tablet with a 1280x800 pixel display. It's powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, and has 1GB of RAM, with 16GB of built in internal storage, and support for a microSD card as well. It also has a 3450mAH battery and a claimed eight-hour battery life, which is pretty good.
There is a 5-megapixel rear camera, and a 2-megapixel front facing camera for video-chat. It's running on Android 4.2, which is a little dated today, but if you can live with that, the specifications are all pretty good, and competitive with phones that cost as much, despite being much bigger.

Best all-rounder: Motorola Moto G (16GB), Rs. 13,999
The Moto G has been our favourite mid-budget phone since the day it was launched. Motorola really shook up the market, redefining our expectations and sending a strong message to local and global competitors alike. There's a lot to like about the Moto G (Review | Pictures) - it has the best balance of features in this price segment, including a good screen, fantastic build quality, and fast-track access to the latest versions of Android as and when they're available.
Our main problem with this device is its lack of support for microSD cards. That means you're stuck with 16GB of storage space (less, after factoring in the OS and overheads) which is just barely enough to keep us going.
Best value: Lenovo S660, Rs. 11,000 (approximate. street price)
With the Lenovo S660 (Review | Pictures), the company has managed to deliver a solid phone that almost rivals the Moto G. It did very well in our battery life test and felt pretty solid overall, but it is built around a weaker MediaTek SoC, has a lower resolution screen, and still runs Android 4.2.
Still, it should be able to get you through most everyday tasks, and Lenovo hasn't skimped on the microSD card slot. The end result is a very competent, value-oriented phone that outclasses everything else at and around its price point.
Best phablet: Huawei Honor 3C, Rs. 14,250 (approximate. street price)
Phones with big screens are popular, but how much do you have to trade off to get one for less than Rs. 15,000? Not much at all, it seems, if you know where to look. Huawei might not be a well-known brand in India right now, but if the Honor 3C's specifications are to be believed, it will be very shortly.
No other phone in this price range can boast of a 5-inch 720x1280-pixel screen, 8-megapixel camera and 2GB of RAM. The processor is a middling quad-core MediaTek MT6582, which might be the only downside here.
Best Qwerty phone: BlackBerry 9720, Rs. 14,000 (approximate. street price)
Nearly all smartphones today are solid rectangular blocks with touchscreens, and if you prefer physical keyboards you're basically left out in the cold. Well, not entirely: BlackBerry still has a few models catering to the die-hard Qwerty market. The BlackBerry 9720 (Review | Pictures) is the best model in our price range.
It's based on the outdated BlackBerry 7 platform and its small square screen isn't much good for movies or games, but that won't matter if work is your main priority. For a little more money you can get the more modern BlackBerry Q5, so the 9720 really serves a niche within a niche.
Best camera: Xolo Q1200, Rs. 13,500 (approximate. street price)
The Xolo Q1200 (Review | Pictures) is priced right up against the Moto G, so it obviously has to do something very special for us to consider it. Xolo seems to have picked out one particular weakness - the Moto G's camera - and attacked it full strength.
We were more than impressed with the quality of images captured in a variety of lighting situations. It's still a low-end phone camera, but it's more than enough for the sort of shots you'd want to post on Facebook when you're out having fun with friends.

Gionee Elife E3 – Rs 13,800The Gionee E3 is a sleek (with a rugged shell), good looking smartphone that packs in a 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex A7 processor with 1GB RAM. It doesn’t jump on to the 5-incher display bandwagon; it instead has a slightly smaller screen measuring 4.7 inches. However, the smartphone exhibits efficiency in performance. Some of the highlights (apart from good performance) are an above average camera, 16GB internal memory and the crisp display. On the flip side, it has a poor battery life and a slightly steep price. The device package contents include protective case, earphones and free screen protector. The MOP (Market Operating Price) of the E3 is Rs 14,999, while some online stores are selling it for as cheap as Rs 13,800.

At E3 last year, we saw gaming franchises share with us with some of the most awaited games across platforms. While some games were mere teasers, others were shown off through interesting gameplay footages. This year we expect to see some of these games arriving on store shelves. So which ones are they going to be? Here's a list of the top 10 games that are likely to launch this year and make 2013 memorable.
1. The Last of Us (PS3 exclusive)
Ever since Naughty Dog gave us Crash Bandicoot, the Jak and Daxter Series and the immensely popular Uncharted franchise, we've been waiting to see what's next. The answer is The Last of US. First teased at the Spike Video Game Awards last year, the game features a father-daughter duo portrayed by Ellie and Joel, who begin their journey from the post apocalyptic city of Pittsburgh, gradually exploring other areas out of the city. This PS3 exclusive draws inspiration from various movies and novels like I Am Legend and City of Thieves. The game is all set to debut on 7 May 2013.
2. Tomb Raider (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)
Developer Crystal Dynamics has planned to reboot the franchise with a young Lara Croft embarking on a quest for survival that unfolds her identity as the Tomb Raider. Players will get a chance to play various side quests, explore the island and face other challenges. In-game graphics of this open-world action adventure game look stunning and so do the interesting bits revealed in gameplay footage so far. Will this game prove successful as other games in the Tomb Raider franchise? Find out on 5 March 2013 when the game releases across platforms.
3. Dead Space 3 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
The third installment in the Dead Space series, the game features a new co-op campaign as well as a new playable character that will be named John Carver. Set on a new frost planet of Tau Volantis, the game follows lead protagonists Isaac Clarke and John Carver to end the Necromorph invasion once and for all. Towards that endeavour, the duo must overcome avalanches, treacherous ice-climbs, and the violent wilderness in order to save the earth from an imminent armageddon. The E3 trailer's ending was typical Dead Space style with main protagonist Isaac Clarke being eaten by a large red insect and showing his effort to fight against the insect's digestive elements and his fate left uncertain. 4. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PS3, Xbox 360)
A spin-off in the Metal Gear series, this action-paced game from Platinum Games is set to take place several years after Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of Patriots. The game focuses on cyborg Ninja Raiden fighting cyborg enemies while attempting to rebuild an unknown country and is expected to include more action sequences. Get ready to slash enemies and objects at will in 19 February 2013;
5. God of War: Ascension (PS3 exclusive)
God of War Ascension is a prequel in the God of War franchise and will narrate the story of Kratos before he became the Ghost of Sparta. In this seventh iteration of the series, vengeance is the focal point as a younger Kratos is out to seek revenge for being tricked into killing his wife and child by Ares. The game is a first in the series to offer multiplayer support for upto eight players. Set out to avenge Kratos' wife and child on 12 March 2013.
6. Beyond: Two Souls (PS3 exclusive)
Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream unveiled its newest and upcoming game titled 'Beyond: Two Souls'at E3 last year, narrating the story of Jodie Holmes played by Ellen Page. Players get to journey through Jodie's life to discover the true meaning of the entity, Idan, alongside her throughout the story. The plot revolves around question about what happens after humans die and promises an experience never like before. Want to find the answers? Beyond: two Souls releases this year.
7. Gears of War: Judgment (Xbox 360 exclusive)
Co-developed by Epic Games and People Can Fly, this version of the game is a prequel that takes place years before the concluding events of Gears of War 3. But even though the major storyline seemed to have concluded fairly definitively, the series is too popular to simply let die. Odds are that we will once again see Marcus Fenix chainsaw something, but for now the series switches to Augustus Cole and Damon Baird and a story from the early days of the war against the Locust. New multiplayer modes will be present, of course and the campaign will expand on the mythology that made this series one of the best on the Xbox. Keep an eye on this one for it releases on 19 March 2013.
8. GTA V (PS3, Xbox 360)
A first major title in the Grand Theft Auto series since 2008, the 15th game in the overall series, GTA V is set in Los Santos in the state of San Andreas and its surrounding areas, based on modern-day Los Angeles and Southern California. Developer Rockstar says that the game will focus on "the pursuit of the almighty dollar". For the first time in the Grand Theft Auto series, GTA V will feature three playable protagonists. The multiplayer mode will feature "Crews" similar to Max Payne 3. A new Social Club functionality will connect play across multiple titles, starting with Max Payne 3 and GTA V. Playing the multiplayer mode in both games allows crews seth up in one game to be carried over to the other. Race your way in the sec on quarter of this year with GTA V.
9. Star Trek (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)
Developed by Namco Bandai Games in association with Paramount Studios, little details are known about this epic action action adventure. What is known is that it features an original storyline and offers immersive co-op gameplay featuring Kirk and Spock, who lead up the fight against the Gorn, an enemy not seen since the days of Star Trek The Original Series. Hop on-board the adventures of the U.S.S. Star Enterprise in Q1 2013.
10. BioShock Infinite (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)
BioShock Infinite is a first-person shooter game set in the year 1912. As the game's lead protagonist, former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt, you make your way across the floating air-city of Columbia to find a young woman, Elizabeth, who has been held captive there for the last twelve years. After a successful rescue attempt, both are pursued by the city's warring factions; the nativist and elite Founders that strive to keep the city for pure Americans and the Vox Populi, a rebel grouping representing the common people. Booker discovers that Elizabeth is key to this conflict and that she is endowed with strange powers to manipulate rifts in the time-space continuum that ravage Columbia. After being postponed last year, the third installment in the BioShock series is set to release on 26 March 2013.

Smartphone lovers have had a good year so far, but we are a picky lot, especially when rumour mills throw up fantastic specs and features for upcoming phones. As it turns out, often companies leave things behind on the cutting floor, dashing expectations and leaving fans disappointed. That has been the case for at least a few smartphones this year, including devices from the likes of HTC, Samsung and Sony. So, which smartphones disappointed the most?
HTC First
First! Yes, the Facebook phone that’s not the "Facebook Phone" tops this list. The HTC First could have been a great smartphone for its price and specs, but saddled with Facebook Home, it became a byword for failure. So much so that the First was put on a fire sale of sorts by AT&T, which started offering the phone at 99 cents following a month on store shelves. Thankfully, the phone didn’t cross the seas and enter India, and remains a US-only smartphone for now. We are sure even that won’t last for too long.
Samsung Galaxy S4
The Galaxy S4 is great in many aspects, but we were still hoping to see Samsung push the boundaries of design and come up with something that doesn’t look like a 2012 rehash. An aluminium body would have helped spice things up, but Samsung went with the same plastic body that is viewed as its biggest weakness. While we understand that plastic or polycarbonate are great in terms of practicality, but when one is paying close to Rs 40,000 for the S4, one expects superior materials and design.
Micromax Canvas 4
Micromax missed more than one trick with the Canvas 4. Firstly, instead of choosing the faster MT6589 Turbo, it went with the same old MT6589 clocked at 1.2GHz. That means in terms of performance, the Canvas 4 and the Canvas HD (and a whole bunch of low-cost quad-core phones) will be on the same level. Secondly, the display should have been a 1080p affair considering how many new phones are coming with that particular spec. And it’s not like these are all high-brow big-name international players. Micromax only had to look at Wickedleak Wammy Passion Z and the Lemon A4 for inspiration.

The Xperia Z is a great phone in many aspects, such as its waterproof and dustproof body. But its slightly smaller "twin", the Xperia ZL, seems almost like an afterthought. Yes, we realise the ZL is supposed to be Sony’s way of cramming a big screen in a small body, but that aside, what is the point of the ZL? There was nothing in the way of differentiation for the ZL and the slightly lower price tag didn’t help it sell well either. In fact, despite the price difference, anyone shopping for a smartphone would have preferred the Z over the ZL, considering the former’s unique design and the weather-resistant shell.

Micromax Doodle A111 – Rs 12,999
Continuing its strategy to bring out affordable Samsung competitors, Micromax lately launched the Canvas Doodle A111. Priced at Rs 12,999, the Canvas Doodle is an uber-affordable competitor to the popular Samsung Galaxy Note. Not as sleek and svelte as the S-Pen, but Micromax’s Doodle also comes with a stylish stylus. In terms of processing power, the Doodle shares the Canvas HD’s 1.2GHz quad-core processor, but instead of a MediaTek MT6589 chipset, Micromax has gone with the Qualcomm MSM8225Q processor. It features MediaTek’s MT6589 chipset with each of the four cores clocked at 1.2GHz , along with 1GB RAM. The device runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and it is appreciated that the device runs the updated OS at such a low price point. The improved version is expected to offer a prolonged battery life, owing to its power-efficient chipset and low-res display. While the original A110 is selling around Rs 10,000, the A110Q quad-core version is being sold for Rs 12,100.

Last month, Spice unveiled its first quad-core smartphone – Stellar Pinnacle Pro. One of the key highlights of the smartphone is its front-facing 5MP camera with a wide angle view, making it apt for video conferencing. It is powered by a quad-core MT6589 processor clocked at 1.2GHz and 1GB RAM. The Pinnacle Pro also comes equipped with the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Another highlight is the expandable 32GB memory that allows ample space in addition to the 16GB internal storage. The Pinnacle Pro’s battery usage will squeeze through a day owing to its 2550 mAh Li-ion Polymer battery.

Zen entered the affordable quad-core smartphone segment with its Ultrafone 701HD. It is an extremely affordable quad-core, large screen combo priced at Rs 11,999. The smartphone rivals Micromax’s A116 Canvas HD, which features a similar set of superior specs such as quad-core processor, 5-inch HD display, 8MP rear camera and a 2MP front facing camera. However, Zen has lowered the price by around Rs 3,000. On paper, the device looks at par with other potential devices in the same segment

Although slightly old, the quad-core iBall Andi 4.5d Quadro is worth mentioning. Fuelled by a 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex A7 processor and 1GB RAM, it runs on Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean. It packs a massive 12MP camera at an affordable price tag that reads Rs 14,999. The device can accommodate two SIMs (GSM + GSM). Unlike most budget smartphones, the Andi 4.5d Quadro does not follow the “phablet” trend and sports a smaller 4.5-inch IPS display. However, the 960 x 540 resolution ensures better screen quality compared to some 5-inchers we’ve seen.

Besides, the new sleek quad-core Gionee E3 priced at Rs 14,999 appears to be a good option, at least on paper. The device has a promising spec sheet, which includes 4.7-inch IPS HD display, 8MP camera, 16GB internal memory and Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean OS. Some more options include the Celkon A119Q and the Lava Iris 458q. The A119Q is a quad-core, Android 4.2 version of Zen's previous A119 handset. It is priced at Rs 12,499. The Lava Iris is a sub-Rs 10,000 smartphone with almost all the features that you see in most of the above mentioned smartphones. It is priced at Rs 8,999.
